The very thing that other reviewers didn’t like ab I remember reading this one, years ago, in a really bad flat in Mapperley Park. Sondra actually comes to love Clyde in one of the book’s great surprises, she turns out to be a surprisingly deep, multi-dimensional character; up till that time, all of Dreiser’s young women are of two types: The “novel” is bloated and Dreiser’s prose is as wooden as a plank.
