The MTS design criteria was to build an all-tube guitar amp that Carvin has long known about the effects of miss-loading a guitar pickup which can. A few months ago, I purchased a used Carvin MTS from a friend . ive herd of this before unfortunately i blew my mts up last night. opinions on the carvin MTS head? | Harmony Central

Second paragraph, that’s pretty much what I had in mind – I couldn’t tell for sure which problems were due to the diodes being removed, so I put them back to help rule out that as an issue. I’m not a trained EE by any stretch, but through the power of the internet and the information that’s been put into it over the decades, there’s a lot of great information – there’s also a ton of crap, but after awhile I got a sense for what was good and what wasn’t.

Do not say, “But Brad told me to do it! Good gawd those cleans. It’s good diagnostic practice to anyone else who might read this. I’m not sure how else to describe it. Swapped C1 to 1uf, swapped R1 to k or higher, up to 1 meg would also be goodand swapped C11 to 2. The sound becomes brittle and thin and that’s just no good.

All the non-heater voltages look fine, but heaters are definitely undervolted. I’ve heard of guys that have used LEDs in place of the diodes. Did your mod earlier tonight and it worked beautifully.

Too high of voltage and your main voltage from the transformer will be higher, while too low and the voltage drops off. But, it’s not to say it’s bad either. The drive channel is really loose and has a high prescence sound that you can dial out ever.

Thoughts on the Carvin MTS 3200?

I replaced the 12AX7 with a 12AT7 and all it did was make the reverb a mtw quieter, but just as harsh. I am no stranger to a soldering iron and I am a physics teaching assistant so I understand the math, kind of I have some professors that are good to bounce this kind of stuff off of but this is my first foray into amplifier modification actually czrvin second after I perform the bias mod on my II. Mod Part One Disclaimer: I’m the opposite of you though – I prefer amp distortion over any pedal, ,ts using a TS to push an amp is usually good with me.

I would say, fire up the soldering iron, replace the popped resistors, and try, try again!

I don’t know jack about circuitry, I was just trying to point out that I think their features and sounds are very similar. I wanted to pick your brain about cavrin mod I saw on YouTube. The best thing to try is to put a cap in position with an appropriate value approximately to block DC. Other may find themselves in the same rabbit-hole so I’ll throw out some ideas.

I suspect that the “buzziness” associated with the gain tone more is a result of the k plate load resistors in the first three gain stages than the diodes between V1a and V2b, which mainly clip out the low end. I’m crazy, but I will only play around with cold amps that have been properly discharged of voltage – I recommend you do the same. You must log in or sign up to reply here.

These make great pedal platforms, but the major of the opinions are right about the drive channel, a minor bit fuzzy. I’d love to say that I went though everything with a pen and paper and factored all of the math to arrive at the values, but that just wasn’t the case.

I have no idea why Carvin has such a love affair with clipping diodes in tubes amps. Originally Posted by Zozobra I’m sure that a similar tone can be generated by putting a dildo in a metal trash can and kicking it down some stairs. As for “solid state sounding”, what do you think causes that?

So with EL34’s the V1 and V2 filaments average 4. It is an all tube amp, pre amp and power amp tubes, from what I know.

This review was originally published on http: Good luck – feel free to check out some of my other projects https: Yes, my password is: I never had much use for the watt mode, so these days I’ve just flipped it to 50 watts and keep power tubes in the xarvin sockets and I’m ready to roll.

As I filtered through the work others have done before me, I saw a few that appeared to yield success as well as some that didn’t. One of the best clean channels ever This was mostly a labor of trying to get some useful information out on an amp that has some really cool bones that could be awesome for more than the designers at Carvin tried to appeal to.

But everything they say above it true – the Clean Channel IS nice, but it completely cagvin the distorted channel, which to my carvi was meant to mimic that Recto late 90’s nu-metal tone, but its wimpy and fizzy.

I’d say the my least favorite feature of the amp is the OD channel. This is a brilliant feature as it turns off half of the stack of power tubes and lets you maintain the tione without the high volume.
