I quite liked it when I first read it in German many years ago. But he needs to tell everyone—grubbers and junkmen—at the same time. All are buoyed up by the hero’s acid humor and some clever situations.

It is so aggressively hostile to human life that the settlers on that planet are essentially supermen — they spend so much time and energy protecting themselves from all the predators on their planet all harrrison the predators being, essentially, every living thing on the planet that when they are off-world they are the most capable, deadliest fighting machines in the universe.

I read it a long time ago for I have read several of the other reviews of this book and I think the majority have missed the point. He was also a great antiwar thinker.


Deathwold Jason dinAlt was a gambler. When Kerk, ambassador from Pyrrus, engages din Alt to multiply a small stake, things get complicated, and the pair flee to Pyrrus, which offers problems of its own. The native fauna, and even flora, is so terrifyingly aggressive that the Pyrrhans all use special holsters for their guns to get an extra-fast draw.
