This was the first book I ever read by Sayers. Wikimedia Commons Share this: Harriet agrees to conduct the investigation for them. So in a somewhat egoistical way, I find Harriet very interesting. Lord Peter is away on the continent — Rome and Warsaw — and as Harriet Vane progresses in her investigations, she documents dorotht details in a notebook.
The time spent working on the case has them all re-evaluating their feelings. Sayers presents the varied personalities of the dons and students of the university with a lot of color and flair. It’s really quite psychological and introspective. This is a rich soup of gender and class issues and it is hard to isolate the ingredients well, hard for me — you seem to be making a much better job of it!
For the first time, Dorothy Sayers has presented him as a man, with hopes and sayerx and weaknesses and emotions. I first read this book as a junior or senior in high xorothy, shortly after I’d been introduced to Sayers’ writing and was making my way through all of the Wimsey mysteries.
The Dean asks if Harriet Vane has any idea what it might be about. It’s one of the last in the series and thus hard to talk about without spoiling earlier books, as it deals with the resolution of the relationship between Lord Peter and Harriet Vane, the mystery writer dorotby introduced in Strong Poison and rorothy again in Have His Carcase.

I do take your point, Moira, about DLS writing the mores of her time. The reader will be caught up in the who-done-it and find it difficult to put the book down. If you’ve read no Sayers, please read at least those two books before reading Gaudy Nightas otherwise you’ll be missing a lot.
