Considering the Affront are aiming to conquer so many other species, I think it explains at least to a certain extent why for the first time in the series you have factions in the Culture actually pushing for a preemptive war… which takes the novel into some interesting and difficult territory.

Excssion is the 3rd book in the Culture series I’ve read and once again, it didn’t disappoint. The drone’s service log abstract recorded that it had been built as part of a matched pair by the Peace Makes Plenty in excessjon. What we have is a straight forward adventure Genar-Hofoen who lives with the Affront and aggressive expanding civilisation and their bid to claim a space artifact called the Excession.
OK, see you in the next jumbled plot fragment! Could they see the melt-lakes below the glacier’s ragged, dirty skirt, all those centuries from now, covered with the floating bodies released from the ice’s grip? They are funny and quirky, but some are ponderous and self-important, while others are rude, perverse, excessjon downright twisted. High above, slipping in and out of pink-rubbed layers of cloud like small slow clouds themselves, other creatures moved, dirigibles and kites cruising the upper atmosphere with wings and canopies extended, warming in the watery light of a new day. On the whole however, Excession is a Excession is Iain Banks’ clunkiest book so far. Nah, I thought the same thing.
Like when the Sleeper Service is accelerating toward the Excession still a ways out and the other Culture ship is trying to follow it and eventually realizes that the Sleeper Service is not exactly what its been pretending to be.
The book features a large collection of Culture ship namessome of which give subtle clues about the roles these ships’ Minds play in the story. He returned his gaze to the note screen, and read the signal.
There are only a handful of named human characters in this book, and really only three of them are important to the plot—and even then, they really have very little impact on the A-plot. You couldn’t get away with such reticence these days, but this was then; the guidelines were looser.
As different groups both within and outwith the Culture vie for control of the OCP, Banks explores the moral dilemmas presented to a galactic superpower facing its potential destruction.
Use of Weapons Iain M Banks. One of a matched pair. The gelfield suit absorbed the blow by stiffening; Genar-Hofoen staggered a little to one side, laughing. In a sense, the Culture lived with genuine OCPs all around it all the time, eexcession the shape of those Sublimed Elder civilisations, but so far it didn’t appear to have been eexcession checked or controlled by any of them.

The waiter was half the size of the big male and childishly unscarred unless you counted the stump of the creature’s rear beak. I’m not expecting Terry Pratchett here, Banks is normally quite gloomy in his tales, but normally it’s with a small twist of humour that makes it all bearable.
