The title refers to a secondary character, but since his desire, well maybe not desire but inclination, to come to the aid of that character catapults the hero into many of his scrapes, it gorgette sense as a title. November 28, at 8: Sounds like another I must add to my list of must reads. Books by Georgette Heyer. While doing so he rescues a fair but dimwitted maiden, takes on the char Gilly was born an incredibly rich duke.

A bit later, he is driving a gig to find a low thieves den called the Bird in Hand, when he sees a teenage boy who is hurt, stumbling down the road. I look forward to the Regency slang!

I love how she comes into her own in this book too. Indeed, part of the fun with any Fouundling novel is comparing it to ggeorgette you have previously read, recognizing a certain plot twist from one, a secondary character with a doppelganger in another.

Now in his mid-twenties, Gilly simply longs to be free. Jeyer make the adventure so much more fun. After his cousin Matthew finds himself in a very precarious situation in regard to the attentions of a young lady, Gilly decides his life could use a little more autonomy — and sets about dealing with a man who is trying to blackmail his family and their good name. Do not go into it expecting a romance, do go into it expecting a good bit of humor, though.

As a reader, I was thrilled for him when he broke their bonds and went out into georgetet world to see what it was like. He also has his own problems to worry about, including his fight with Lord Lionel and his impending marriage with Lady Harriet.

Being pushed into an engagement with an old friend is the last straw, and Gilly takes an opportunity to flee his hangers-on and pretend to be just a gentleman. It made for a charming contrast with, say, Alverstoke from Frederica who cares for no one but himself until he slowly learns to care for the heroine and her siblings.


Lord Lionel and his team of servants baby the Duke and treat him like a child, when in reality he is almost twenty-five years old.

Tom becomes a friend and nuisance to the Duke for the rest of the novel. The Foundling sounds like a different book with villains, kidnappers, a damsel in need and a hero testing his wings. You gotta love Gilly, he’s a Duke who wants to be a nobody. Although very similar in plot to Sprig Muslin and, I believe, Charity Girl I haven’t read that one, so I can’t be sure hheyer, The Foundling is definitely a unique read, and I suspect, a deeper, more profound story.

The story works a little better than Charity Girl, but it This is more adventure than romance, and bears a strong resemblance to Charity Girlwith another ‘unsuitable’ female in need of rescue, and handed over to a long-standing friend-come-love interest of the main male character. Liversedge that is a great name for a villain! Some have objected that the story takes a long time to get going, but the first hundred pages, while light on action, give us a deep sympathy and understanding for the hero.
